May 21-22nd - Paradise Cafe to Forbes Saddle

Got a ride from a great trail angel in Idyllwild all the way back to the Paradise Cafe Thursday late afternoon. We lucked out and were able to eat dinner at the Paradise Cafe once again. After gorging ourselves, we headed back on the trail. Made it 5 miles to a jeep road where we camped on the side of the road.
The next day we headed up to Forbes Saddle - about a 10 mile hike. We took our time - taking lots of lengthy breaks to minimize soreness to Tom's blisters and shin splints. The slow speed and breaks seemed to do the trick - Tom was able to make it to the Saddle without much pain.

We had hoped for a water cache, but there was only empty containers. In need of water, we hiked a 1/2 mile down to a spring. The water was pooled up in a rubbermaid container via a garden hose - with green floaty things on top. Not appetizing. Up until now, we have been fortunate to not have to fill up at springs. But we had no choice this time. Luckily, the spring was bubbling over some rocks so we filled up directly from the rocks. The water was clear, but smelled of sulphur. The Aqua Mira dissipated the sulpher smell and the water ended up not being too bad.

The winds were pretty strong up on Forbes Saddle, so we huddled down between some bushes. For the first time on our entire trip - we were cold. We ended up getting into our sleeping bags about 6:30pm and zonked out soon after.
