July 18th, 2009 - Sierra City

Had a great night's sleep at the hotel. The bed was super comfy with soft sheets. Decided to take a zero in Sierra City to rest Tom's shin splints. Spent the morning resupplying and had the rest of the day to chill out.

The's a heat wave right now so it has been quite sweltering in town. There is no air-conditioning around the town so we did the next best thing - we went to the local water hole. There is a a great swimming hole just 2 blocks away from town - so we spent the afternoon cooling off in the river.

After cooling off and eating some grub, we headed to the lawn of the one church in town who allows hikers to camp for free. Since we had showered the day before, we didn't need a hotel and free sounded good, so the church lawn it was.

While we were hanging out at a picnic table on the church lawn, a SUV pulled up. The people in the SUV asked if we were hungery. Being thru hikers, we're always hungry, so of course we said yes. Next thing we know, they're giving us all their leftovers.

I guess I know how homeless people feel. We were thankful for the food. I helped myself to half of a cantaloupe. Yum! Luckily there were a lot of other hikers to help eat the grub.
