Wok up before anyone else was up in town today. Wanted to hit the trail before the heat set in. Worked well - we did the climb up to the Buttes while the temps were cool and it didn't seem too bad. Up near the Buttes we found lots of forest service roads. Being the weekend, there were lots of cars. Turns out the area is a mecca for mountain bikers.
Had lunch at a trailhead where we people watched - CA mountain bikers are a different breed. After lunch, the heat really set in. Ended up running out of water and stil had 3 miles to go until our next water supply. Learned our lesson - we are no longer in the Sierras where water is plentiful. The promised water supply ended up being a slimy, scumy lake.
After much discussion, we finally decided to look elsewhere for water. Fortunately finding it about 1/2 mile down a jeep road. We will be carrying more water from now on.
