Slept in real late for being on the trail - 7am. It was cool outside and we were so warm and toasty in our sleeping bags. We were not in a real hurry since we only planned to do 21 miles for the day. We planned to significantly decrease our mileage in the Sierras for several reasons - we're hiking at higher elevations (8,000feet to 11,000 feet), the trail is steeper and more technical, and most importantly -we want to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Well, it turned out good that we planned a low mileage day because we mostly climbed all day. The altitude started to get to me. I felt strong, but was moving slow. I just didn't seem to have any pep in my step. And to complicate matters, I had to limit what I ate since both Tom and I underestimated our food needs. It's hard to carry a full 10 days worth of food which caused us to skimp a bit in the food department.
As the day wore on, the scenery just kept getting better. Lots of open woods, rocks, snow-capped mountains, and green meadows. We are so thrilled to finally be back in the mountains! Found a great place to set up camp - overlooking a nice green meadow with Cirque Peak in the background.
