July 28th - Hat Creek Rim to Burney Falls

Transcriber's Note: Tom writing.

Great sleep last night. The evening temps are very comfortable here. No need to bundle up in the sleeping bag. It is quite nice with the bag simply draped over me.

We were up and hiking by 6am. By 8am the heat started showing its ugly face. We should've started earlier but we needed the sleep.

Dusty trail full of volcanic rocks made the travel more difficult than anticipated. From Hat Creek Rim to the Fish Hatchery (20 miles) we were tripping over lava rocks and inhaling clouds of dust.

Caught up to Monologue today. We haven't seen her since Idylwild. Nice to see that she's still on the trail and feeling healthy.

The heat really zapped our energy today. A 32 mile hike ended with us feeling as though we had been hit by a truck.

Now we're at Burney Falls State Park and we're absolutely hammered.

It will make us stronger.

  1. This was about the time it hit 107 degrees in Sammamish, WA. An all-time record for any day of the year. 103 in Seattle.
