July 27th - Warner Valley Campground to Hat Creek Rim

After a day of unexpected R&R, we knew we had to put in extra miles today. Luckily the terrain was quite flat and we were able to move fast. We both enjoyed the easy terrain - allowed us to spend more time looking around and enjoying the sights and sounds and smells since we didn't have to worry about footing as much.

Walked 27 miles in time to have dinner at the gas station just outside of Old Station. there are trail angels in Old Station (the Heitman's) who we really would have loved to stay with, but after our shennanigans at Drakesbad, we knew we couldn't afford to enter another trail angel vortex. The gas station was a nice little treat. We cooked our regular dinner outside on the picnic table, but supplemented the dinner with ice cold gatorade, soda and some Haagen Daas ice cream for me. :)

As we were walking back to the trail a pick-up pulled over and asked if we need a ride. Since the trail was just a few hundred feet away we said no. But then the guy introduced himself. Turns out he is Mr. Heitman. He was on his way to add more water to the cache they maintain up on Hat Creek Rim. So... we got a 2 mile ride uphill to where the trail stars on the Hat Creek Rim. What luck!

We got tired of folliwng the trail on the Hat Creek Rim, so we decided to do a little cross-country adventure. we were surprised to run into some campers, that came running over to us and were all excited to meet us. Turns out there was a crew from the US Forest Service out doing research on the effects of cattle grazing on a specific grass. They offered us homemade cookies and beer, so of course we had to sit and chat for awhile. There are just too many fun things to do and people to meet on the trail - makes it hard to actually hike!

We finally pulled away and made it a couple more miles before the sun went down. Made it 36.9 PCT miles for the day (including our 2 mile truck ride).
